looking for help to extract debian initrd image

hi,
I am using this command to extract an initrd
gzip -dc ../initramfs-genkernel-fai | cpio -id
and to put it back in:
find ./ | cpio -H newc -o > ../initramfs-genkernel-fai-new
have fun
