 Hi Michael. Thanks for taking a look at this!

 I tried my original menu.lst line again:

kernel /boot/vmlinuz boot=live FAI_FLAGS="verbose,createvt,sshd" FAI_ACTION=install ip=:130.58.68.7:130.58.68.1:255.255.255.0::eth0:bootp

 and three others based on your suggestions:

kernel /boot/vmlinuz boot=live FAI_FLAGS="verbose,createvt,sshd" FAI_ACTION=install ip=:130.58.68.7:130.58.68.1:255.255.255.0::eth0:dhcp

kernel /boot/vmlinuz boot=live FAI_FLAGS="verbose,createvt,sshd" FAI_ACTION=install ip=:130.58.68.7:130.58.68.1:255.255.255.0::eth0:bootp hostname=horseradish

kernel /boot/vmlinuz boot=live FAI_FLAGS="verbose,createvt,sshd" FAI_ACTION=install ip=130.58.68.37:130.58.68.7:130.58.68.1:255.255.255.0::eth0:bootp hostname=horseradish

 Only that last one worked (IPADDR and HOSTNAME are set, and the network
 gets configured correctly), but that's good enough for me. I can just
 boot from the usb stick and edit the kernel line from the grub menu for
 each machine I install. It's not perfect, but it will do.

 Also, just FYI, I have some newer machines that can boot off the
 network, and they work fine with ubuntu hardy, FAI, and dhcp. I'll
 debug my ubuntu FAI config space with these machines. Once I've got it
 working, I'll use fai-cd and a usb stick to install my older machines.
