I think it can work out of the box. Here with fai 2.8

Maybe that something has gone wrong with fai-setup that generates some 
data for the loguser account. 

Have you set LOGUSER, FAI_REMOTESH and FAI_REMOTECP in /etc/fai.conf
before you have call fai-setup?

After fai-setup can you make a ssh login without passwd from fai account 
to the server himself?  
( su - fai 
server:/home/fai> ssh fai at server 
or with ssh fai at ip_of_server )
