NIS stuff is in scripts/MERLIN/S*fai for me. It's indeed quite hidden...

Hmmm, I don't remember the details but it might be useful to only run ypbind
(with the correct yp.conf settings, of course).
You can try it by hand first (in chroot) - the -d option may be helpful.
If you need more than the available console(s) try screen...
