CVS fai-kernels and 2.4.20

Hello list!

I'm attempting to build the cvs version of the fai-kernels package and 
am having problems with unresolved symbols. For a test, I check out a 
pristine copy of the fai-kernels cvs directory, apt-get install 
--reinstall a clean version of the 2.4.20 source, change the tulip 
driver from module to built in the fai-kernel-config-2.4 file. The 
dpkg-buildpackage works flawlessly and creates fai-kernels_1.5_i386.deb 
one dir up. In install the package and it puts the kernel image in:

/usr/lib/fai/kernel/kernel-image-2.4.20_fai1_i386.deb

Now I install it:

cd to /usr/lib/fai/nfsroot
dpkg -x ../kernel/kernel-image-2.4.20_fai1_i386.deb .
chroot . update-modules
chroot . depmod -a -F boot/System.map-2.4.20 2.4.20

Boom! Tons of unresolved symbols. The version.h and other typical causes 
look fine. Any suggestions?

Also, I've seen some comments on the list about setting up a FAQ 
somewhere. I'd love to contribute to it and would even donate my fai 
config scripts to a library if there is any interest in starting one.
