/tmp not writable when booting from NFS

Could this be related to the bug that we discovered last August:

 https://lists.uni-koeln.de/pipermail/linux-fai/2016-August/011454.html

It looks like there is a bug when trying to use overlay-fs with NFSv4.
Switching to NFSv3 worked around the problem for us.
