bad interaction between fai and mkconf (mdadm)

Mmmm. I also can't find the DEVICE variable inside the FAI sources. We have
$BOOT_DEVICE and $device, but not $DEVICE.

Which version of FAI are you using? Which mdadm version?
Maybe the lowecase version get converted to the uppercase variable?

Maybe you can put all your lo file to paste.debian.net, so I can try
to localte the problem.
