FAI-CD aborts after "mounting root filesystem"

Exactly. It didn't work with Jaunty (or previous versions of Ubuntu)
out-of-the-box, so I went this way to circumvent these problems.

That's possible, but I haven't tried yet. But I'd be curious about any
reports on that.
