Does that mean live-initramfs that is available at "deb
http://www.informatik.uni-koeln.de/fai/download etch koeln" doesn't work
with edgy?

Oh, you're completely right. The unionfs module is not necessary with
ubuntu (it is included in the kernel images), and I need to publish a
backported live-initramfs package at
http://ppa.launchpad.net/fai/ubuntu.

will do that now..
