Here with fai-kernels 2.6.14 SATA works. The problem I had when
installing ubuntu dapper client is that /dev/sda* doesn't exist on the
nfsroot. As I understand the problem, it is because /dev is mounted
read-only on the install client and so udev can't build devices. As work
around I builded manually the /dev/sda* files like that:

cd /usr/lib/fai/nfsroot/
./MAKEDEV hda
./MAKEDEV sda

Don't know if it will help you.
