sfdisk troubles while tyrin to install ubuntu hoary with FAI

I had the same problem years ago when I switched from a 2.2 to a 2.4
install kernel. The new kernel detects a different disk geometry, and
so preserving could not be made. I had to clean the partition table
:-(

So trying the old install kernel may help you.
