let me guess: are you using vmware ? I experienced exactly the same error
when using a too old version of vmware in connection with a 2.6 kernel: 
uname -s
segfaults (!) It is called as one of the first things in /etc/rcS.d/, so you
see the above error...

After an update to 4.5.2.8848 it works like a charm.
If you experience this error on a 'real' computer... well... never seen it
there ;)
