No HDB/HDC/SDA/SDB

I am trying to setup autofs for students on CD, Floppy, and ZIP drives.  
The problem is that in the past couple of installs, when the machine 
reboots there is no HDB/HDC/SDA/SDB.  The only drive that shows up 
initally is fd0.  I have watched the boot up messages as best I can, and 
there are problems with some of them.  Some modules say "FATAL: 
module_name not found".  I have checked in /var/log/dmesg, 
/var/log/kern.log, and other log files, but I can't find the error 
messages.  I have grepped in /var/log for FATAL, but it never shows up.  
Does anyone have any clues as to what could be happening or what I 
should do to fix it???
