hangs

I'm using 2.5.1 fai with sarge debian distro so this wasn't fixed as you
see and it seems to don't depend on the number of packages to install
but on the packages.
Can anybody give me tiny intro to bash programming why in rcS
(task action > >( tee -a $rcslog ) 2>&1)
is used instead of simple
(task action 2>&1 | tee -a $rcslog)
what are the implications?
