I also found this problem, but it is even worse when using fai to update
a system... 
exporting only fai.conf and not subroutines* in  rcS_fai or 
fai-update-system solves the problem. It is only _one_ shell working on
this stuff, so the procedures don't need to be exported...
it is patched in PFAI...
