hi Holger,

first you have to set up apt. You can use the command apt-setup or
manually edit sources.list (try: man sources.list). Here's mine

/etc/apt/sources.list:

deb ftp://debian.uni-essen.de/debian stable main contrib non-free
deb ftp://non-us.debian.org/debian-non-US stable/non-US main contrib non-free

The try 

apt-get update
apt-get check


It should look like

# apt-get check
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
