Just to throw another solution into the ring, what we've been doing here
is using dpkg --unpack to uarch the pkgs then deleting and pre/post install
scripts then running dpkg --configure to update the database so it says
the package has been properly installed. Of course we only do this for
very bad packages for which noniteractive feature doesn't work.
Also we keep a seperate tree of configuration files modified how we like
which is then dumped over AFTER all packages have been installed, thus
packages with bad defualt settings are not a problem.
