Der Vortrag findet im Rahmen des Kolloquiums "Praxis der Datenverarbeitung" im

Abstract zum Vortrag (der Vortrag wird auf deutsch gehalten)

UNICORE makes seamless Grid computing a reality: its user-friendly
interface allows easy and uniform access to distributed computing resources,
and provides support for running important scientific and engineering
applications. Scientists and engineers can harness the power of today's
supercomputers without having to become experts in the access and security
policies at different centres and the effective use of the various platforms.

UNICORE addresses the security concerns of computer centres and users in
science and industry: authentication relies on X.509 certificates, all
communication between the software layers are protected by SSL and
participating sites can add extra layers of encryption and authentication
if so desired.

The UNICORE architecture is based on three layers: the client interfaces
to the end-user, providing functions for creating jobs to be run and
monitoring their progress, the gateway is the single entry point for
all users at a centre and cooperates with the firewalls to only allow
legitimate users in, and the server schedules UNICORE jobs for execution,
translating the specification to the commands appropriate for the target
platform. The server also controls transmission of files, including output
and result files that can be later retrieved by the user.

 UNICORE is in operational use by leading HPC centres in Germany and Europe
and user communities for bio molecular simulations, meteorology, and CAE.
A number of projects are continuing the development and working on extensions.
In the German R&D project UNICORE Plus, the leading German supercomputer
centres together with Pallas are developing a production-quality version
of UNICORE software and phasing it in as the premier interface for external
users. Areas of development include administration and management tools,
operation of a public key infrastructure, adding support for standard
simulation applications and interfacing to storage servers and archive systems.

The EuroGRID project is establishing trans-European Grids for important
application areas using UNICORE as a base. Functional extensions are being
developed in the areas of failsafe file transfer, dynamic resource discovery
and brokering, application coupling, ASP services and interactive access.

The GRIP project will develop solutions for interoperating the UNICORE and
Globus GRID systems, and contribute to the ongoing Grid standardisation
efforts under of the Global Grid Forum umbrella.
