As I also came across this problem: yes, I think this is a good solution.

Besides that, Derek's solution is quite beautiful. From the gnupg manpage:
"--dearmor
              Pack or unpack an arbitrary input  into/from  an  OpenPGP 
ASCII
              armor.   This is a GnuPG extension to OpenPGP and in
general not
              very useful."

It seems he has just proven the manpage wrong ;-)
