Some years ago, I had a defective cable which had only problems when
using larger ethernet packets. Pinging worked very well, but when the
machine started using NFS and NIS, the whole networked stalled because
of the larger packets. IMO only the packages size should influence if
the network is working or not. I'm not aware of any reason that
software or a different driver could "fix" a defective cable.
