Again, I don't see anything being wrong.

Your description sounds like something goes horribly wrong with the grub 
install - like even one of the primary grub stages isn't working properly.

But if there is no space issue on the partition, I have no idea why it 
should fail.

Does the software.log state that the grub package is being installed 
properly?
