FAI kernel has /dev/sda for IDE hardisk

I'm not sure this is an FAI question but my custom FAI boot CD creates a
device /dev/sda for the IDE hard drive instead of /dev/hda. I built a custom
2.6.24 kernel because I am blind and need to include a patch for a screen
reader. But I also built a regular 2.6.24 kernel using the config from a
stock debian 2.6.24 kernel. All I did was add the screen reader patches and
recompiled. And that kernel sees the HD as hda. So does grml.
But my FAI boot CD sees only sda. The stringe thing to me is that it seems
to install okay except that the /etc/fstab file is messed up. If I control-c
during the install process, I can mount /dev/sda1 and see files in there.
So the install is working by accessing the IDE hard drive as /dev/hda.
What have I done wrong?
