I have succeeded in adding speech to the FAI boot CD. Here is what I did:

1. . Build a kernel with speakup console speech using the kernel config from
the FAI boot CD.

2. Edit /etc/fai/make-fai-nfsroot.conf, change the line beginning with
KERNELPACKAGE= to point to your new kernel.
3. Install the kernel in the nfsroot:

# make-fai-nfsroot -K

4. Build a new boot CD with make-fai-bootfloppy, optionally adding the
kernel parameter for your speech synthesizer. For example:

# make-fai-bootfloppy -v -B -F -m /mnt  -f fai.img -i fai.iso
speakup_synth=ltlk
