mixing architectures with debootstrap

So, if make-fai-nfsroot is supposed to create the nfsroot in
/sur/share/fai/nfsroot, I can just issue my own debootstrap command to
create an root directory there? Something like:

# debootstrap --arch=i386 etch /usr/share/fai/nfsroot http:ftp.debian...

I tried that too. Although debootstrap seemed to work, when I tried to build
the CD, it did not. But a step is missing -- installing the kernel. How do I
get a kernel in there? Maybe i could chroot to my nfs root and install the
kernel via dpkg?
