Fai server can be a different architecture from clients?

yes, sure.

Yes, you could. But it won't help you, as make-fai-nfsroot installs the kernel
which lifes inside that package into the nfsroot. And (now comes the
problem:) you need to create the nfsroot on the target arch, so in the end,
it will not work.
