this is with the linux-kernel-2.6.16-fai-kernels package from the Uni
Koeln repository. The install system and the target system are both
Debian Sarge. What else should/could I try to fix?

I am only pulling in some unrelated (?) backports, like Pg 8.1, via
an additional line in sources.list, via apt-proxy.
