recent install problems

Seems that your nfsroot is not built correctly.

That's not correct. By default make-fai-nfsroot will install a new
kernel into /boot/fai, but only if you specified this new kernel in
make-fai-nfsroot.conf.

You should have mailed earlier. Downgrading is IMO a bad idea.
