Sadly, I was wrong about this. It does fix the install of the 2.6.8-11 kernel.
Even though the logs say that 'mkinitrd' failed, there is is an initrd image there.
The failure from the logs:
====
Setting up kernel-image-2.6.8-11-amd64-k8-smp (2.6.8-14) ...
/usr/sbin/mkinitrd: device /dev/sda1 is not a block device
Failed to create initrd image.
dpkg: error processing kernel-image-2.6.8-11-amd64-k8-smp (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 9

The files that show up anyway:

The /boot/grub/menu.lst lists:

And when it comes up, kernel panic, /dev/sda1 can't be found or some such.
So far Google, the FAIwiki, etc turn up nothing useful.
Any clues, pointers, etc. would be much appreciated.
thanks,
