Could you please go into details a bit? I've been using such a setup for
ages and haven't been aware that it would not work:

Gigabit backbone: HP ProCurve 4208gl
directly connected: GB onboard (SuperMicro boards, both E1000 and Broadcom
stuff)

As long as the BIOS supports PXE, there's no problem.
Of course I haven't been able to boot other machines (with SysKonnect cards)
via PXE but this is a "feature" of those cards (and even EtherBoot would
not work with them for some strange reason so I'm stuck with the FAI
boot floppy in these cases)...
