configuring kernel in DEFAULT.var

thanks for your response.

i assume the "addpackages" variable is very important and must point 
to a valid kernel-image file? and it is that variable that installs 
the kernel to the host system?

would something like this work:

addpackages="kernel-image-2.4.18-686"

if so, where do i place the kernel image file? inside 
/usr/local/share/fai/files?

where does fai look for the kernel-image package to install?

do i just use the kernel-image-2.4.18-686.deb file that i can get off 

an apt repository?
