First, you should upgrade, so you have the script fai-chboot (since 2.5).

The dhcpd.conf example in fai says:

I can mail you the newest fai package. It's not that big
(<1MB). Otherwiese just get the script fai-chboot from me.
It's also possible to define FAI_ACTION in the script LAST.var (also
not included in fai 2.3.1). So upgrading to fai 2.5.3 would be the
best. But you can use the "old" fai-kernels 1.2 with 2.5.3.
