This is just what I wanted to do, though that mkpasswd is _very_ suspicious...! It is indeed very 
strange to be sitting inside the whois package (Hahah!) I think I will stick to my md5 password 
generator for now just in case...

I might also try and modify pam.conf using cfengine to be more 'fai-like', although what you did 
does indeed work quite well.

In any case, I understand what's going on now...
