problems with install_packages script

Anyone have problems installing gconf, sawfish-gnome and other
packages?  apt-get says post-installation returned with error
code 1, but there's no further information.

Also I see a recurring error "xargs: environment is too large
for exec" while install_packages fails to install these, and
also when I try `chroot /tmp/target apt-get -f install` (or -m)
on the command line.

Do I need to use mkdivert or the adddivert() function?  Where?
