3com MBA problem

We have a Tyan Tiger MPX Dual Athlon motherboard with 3c920c onboard NIC
(MBA v4.32). 
Despite our success in booting the computer over the network by using
rom-o-matic bootcode on a floppy, we were unable to boot it directly
using built-in MBA.

In BIOS, we have chosen TCP/IP and DHCP options. 
Various attempts usually resulted in the following:

MBA    v4.32 (BIOS Integrated)

File transfer error: Image file too large for low memory

The last line did not appear in all cases. In particular we tried
fai-kernels (1.4) kernel-image-2.2.20_DHCP1_i386.deb and
kernel-image-2.4.18_fai1_i386.deb, and applied mknbi-linux and
imggen(tried both 1.01 and 1.00).

We've been trying to boot the machine for several days and are getting
desparate. Could anyone give us a hint?
