bootp reply not seen

I have successfully booted and installed several machines
using FAI and bootp.  

However, now with some new machines I am seeing 
that the bootpd sees the request and responds, but the client
doesn't recieve or just ignores the response.

Has anybody else had this behaviour and do you have 
any suggestions about what to do next.
