pwconv, shadow

Has anyone worked out a means of automating the use of pwconv within
FAI?

We've been using shadow passwords on our machines, and I'd like to
automate the conversion of the initial passwd file that FAI creates
before appending local site data.

My reading of the pwconv man page suggests it operates directly on files
in /etc, and not e.g. $target/etc
