Setting the date via NTP: NTPSRVS(_1)

Recently, installing one machine failed with cryptic dpkg error messages, it turned out that the onboard battery had run low and the clock had been reset.

There is some code in task_setup() to set the clock, but we can't figure out what the intended use is. The code checks for $NTPSRVS_1 and uses $NTPSRVS. Furthermore, since setup is invoked before setvar, what's the way to have whichever variable is needed set at that stage?
