disk partitions and special partition IDs

I didn't know this before, and therefore set up a few disks in the usual way:

Disk /dev/hdb: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 60801 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

   Device Boot      Start         End      Blocks   Id  System
/dev/hdb1               1       60801   488384001   83  Linux

Could you please elaborate where the problem is?

I've been missing for a long time the ability to assign proper partition ids
to non-DOSishly partitioned disks (e.g. on Alpha architecture)...
