**FIELD SCHOOL: JOHANNESBURG – Urban Commons**

7.-12. Oktober | Johannesburg

The Field School is an ongoing project organised by the Laboratory for Art and Research at the Department Art and Music, University of Cologne. The upcoming iteration will take place as an exchange project in cooperation with the Department of Visual Art, Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture (FADA), University of Johannesburg and will include lectures and workshops by Thulile Gamedze and MADEYOULOOK (Molemo Moiloa & Nare Mokgotho).

Wir sind jetzt alle Demokraten. Zugleich mehren sich die Zweifel an der Idee der Demokratie. In den Debatten über die Herausforderung des Autoritarismus gerät oft aus dem Blick, dass die Demokratie als Herrschaftsform spezifische Lebensformen voraussetzt. Im Zentrum des Vortrags steht die Frage: wenn Kultur eine wesentliche, obgleich schwer fassbare Grundlage für demokratische Ordnung bildet, ist es möglich zu bestimmen, welche Formen und Stile die Demokratie fördern, erhalten und beleben?

Premise that black people, across different geographies and political histories have inhabited urban spaces and contributed to urbanization processes in ways that remain unprecedented and unparalleled. With vernaculars, social and temporal orientations, and techne that have had to navigate the tricky conundrum of black people attempting to insert themselves into what passes as the normative ethos and demeanors of urban life, while simultaneously refusing to “normalize” themselves according to the structures of power and codes that have subjugated them.
